Photographer's Note
Good Morning Everyone,
If anyone visits Florence, it would be difficult to avoid the Duomo. In fact, why would you, it is such a beautiful, iconic building.
The Duomo stands tall over the city with its magnificent Renaissance dome designed by Filippo Brunelleschi and with the baptistery right across. The cathedral named in honour of Santa Maria del Fiore is a vast Gothic structure built on the site of the 7th century church of Santa Reparata.
The cathedral was begun at the end of the 13th century by Arnolfo di Cambio, and the dome, which dominates the exterior, was added in the 15th century on a design of Filippo Brunelleschi. A statue to each of these important architects can be found outside to the right of the cathedral, both admiring their work for the rest of eternity. The cathedral took two centuries to be deemed finished- Discover Tuscany
We ascended the the bell tower, (Giotti's Bell Tower) a beautiful Gothic campanile next to the Duomo from which to take this close-up photograph of the Duomo dome.
Thank you for your interest, Bev :-)

Hello Bev,
Only a fool could visit Florence without seeing the Duomo. It's one of the most beautiful buildings in the world and worth every minute (or hour) spent there. That is quite evident from this photo which puts the focus on the dome and the upper parts of the cathedral. The weather permitted a photo with perfect light and colours. I sometimes think I should visit Florence once again before I die. Maybe there is still time. ;-)
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Bev,
Very interesting to see this beautiful dome on its own level, most photographs show it from street level. A well framed image, perfectly exposed. Excellent rendering of the colours and detailing.
Weather has taken a turn for the worse today, much cooler and heavily overcast.

Hello Bev,
I am not particular a big fan of Italy, but I like to make an exception for Florence (and Tuscany). A beautiful city with so many highlights.
I can still remember how I fled into the Dome to shelter for a terrible rain-shower. But of course it was not a punishment to view the interior of this magnificent church.
Excellent presentation
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hello Bev,
It was 40c when I visited Florence so I didn't do anything more strenuous than ordering a gelato from the many roadside kiosks. A fantastic view of the red dome against the blue sky with good sharpness & lighting contrasts. Tfs!

Bonjour Bev,
Je sais exactement où tu te trouvais pour la prise de cette photo.Je crois d'ailleurs avoir fait exactement la même sous une température très semblable. Un beau cadrage serré qui met bien le dôme en valeur.
Amicalement

Hello Beverley, a beautiful sharp picture of the Duomo.
You put your climb to good effect to achieve this particular view.
I love the distant views across the city where the Duomo is so dominant.
I would love to return to Florence, so thanks for this reminder for the time being!
You were so lucky with the weather, the blue sky is perfect.

Hello Bev, Good picture from your archive. It was a good idea to ascend the bell tower. You had there a fantastic POV. Great view of the dome, we can see also the people up there. When I was in Florence two times, the number of tourists made it impossible to enjoy the city. Everywhere just the river of people flowing in the streets, queues to monuments.
Kind regrads Malgo

Hello Bev,
This is a very fine and close photograph of Brunelleschi's magnificent dome of the Duomo and well done you for climbing the heights of that bell tower to achieve such an impressive viewpoint! The light is glorious, the colours rich and well saturated and the details and sharpness are excellent.
Funnily enough, I remember having seen a television programme which took us inside the dome and described the amazing inner architectural details of it. The fellow presenting the programme told us how Brunelleschi ended up getting the contract to build it. Apparently several architects were gathered in a room and the person commissioning the Duomo stated that he wished the dome to be shaped like an egg. He then presented each architect with a fresh chicken's egg and asked them how they could make the egg stand on its end. All of them sat and played with their eggs pondering how they could do it but Brunelleschi picked his up and smashed the bottom of it on the table whereupon the upper part of the egg stood proudly upward. So he was awarded the contract.
Or so the story goes!
Lovely!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi Bev,
I am so jealous, I really have to visit this place someday!
This dome is huge and so recognizable! Its design is so unique.
Interesting point of view, nice perspective towards the dome, I don't think I have seen it from this angle yet.
Excellent work,
