Crucifixion - Campello sul Clitunno (PG)
The Crucifixion of the Barnabite convent of Campello sul Clitunno, painted by Maestro di Fossa, is dated 1342. It was positioned behind the altar of an oratory or public church of the monastery of San Giovanni Battista.
The great crucifixion occupies the central part of the wall, at the foot of Christ, on the left, St. Peter and the Sorrowful Madonna, on the right St. John and St. Paul. Above two weeping angels flutter.
On the left of the main scene, later and by another hand, perhaps attributable to Jacopo Zabolino di Vinciolo, you can see St. Francis of Assisi and St. John the Baptist, on the right remains the lower part of what must have been a Flagellation.
Above the Crucifixion there are a series of frescoes even later, severely damaged for the construction of an attic, a fifteenth-century Nativity, a Madonna enthroned with Child and, even later, superimposed on the fifteenth-century cycle, the lower part of the Marriage mystic of Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

Hello Silvio,
Relatively much remains of this fresco, and we can see that the quality was quite good. The light was fine, so the colours have been well captured.

This is a most appropriate fresco for today.
Though much of the scene is damaged we can see enough of what remains to appreciate its quality

you have such a great collection of paintings and churches, I am not surprised you manage to find such appropriate presentations for these days.
Beautiful old painting, at least part of it is presented. The images of crusifiction are usually particularly full of symbols, I see also the nativity scene there, maybe these are rosary five scenes next to each other.

Hello Silvio,
Major damage to this fresco. Yet Jesus Christ on the cross is still clearly visible.
The part in the upper left corner with the birth in the cave in Bethlehem is better preserved.
Certain colours stand out well from the dark background.
