Photographer's Note

The title is Latin for "Light and Reverence." Those two nouns seemed to describe the impressions I had as I stood in the great Basilica di San Vitale, a 6th-century Christian church. The basilica is most famous for its lovely mosaics adorning its presbytery, which you can see in the distance. Front and center is a mosaic of the Emperor Justinian bearing an uncanny resemblance to Mark Zuckerberg. :)

To be here in a place that has been around for almost 1,000 years longer than the Western Hemisphere has been known to Europeans was truly incomprehensible. I couldn't help but feel awed by the dedication of the early Christians who built it and maintained it through the centuries. Religion has been responsible for its share of atrocities, but it has also created things of great beauty. This church is one of them.
