Fortress of the Rectors in Benevento
The fortress of the Rectors is the result of several overlapping constructions from distant and different eras.
The structure is almost divided into two parts, the corner tower which is the strictly Lombard part and the palace of the Papal Governors with a rectangular plan which is the most medieval part. The fortress of the Rectors, at the behest of Pope John XXII was built on the remains of a Longobard fortress in 1321. The structure is divided into three floors: on the ground floor there are the dungeons, on the first floor there are large halls with details wooden ceilings, while on the second floor there are two watchtowers from which it is possible to admire the whole city of Benevento. Today it is the seat of the province of Benevento, and houses a permanent exhibition, "Excellent men, traces of the Benevento Risorgimento".
