A cottage on the island of Inishmore, the largest of the Aran Islands in Galway Bay. It's still fairly small, however, as it has an area of only about 12 sq. miles. It was previously called Aranmore. Gaelic is still widely used; there's a school on the island where students often spend several weeks in summer to brush up on the language. The islands are one of the few areas where there are still many people who don't speak any English at all. As such, it's famous for its strong Irish culture. There are many pre-Christian and Christian ancient sites, the most famous of which is Dun Aengus, sometimes referred to as "the most magnificent barbaric monument in Europe." The island has changed somewhat but it's still very traditional. Electricity reached the island only in the 70s. The easiest way to get around is to use small minivans, horse-drawn carriages or bicycles. The principal town is Kilronan. This was taken at the entrance to the Dun Aengus site, where there are various shops selling various items, which you can see in the window here (!), including the most famous export, the intricately woven knit sweaters.
