Dublin in a nutshell, a photo from Dublin, South

Photographer's Note

There are not too many high buildings in Dublin, so the seventh floor of the Guinness Storehouse ensures an incredible, although a bit distant, view over entire city centre. I have already uploaded a photo with the whole panorama of Dublin (SEE HERE). In this photo I show you a fragment of it which seems to contain a lot of important elements and can give you some orientation about what to expect in Dublin. Remember that whatever seems so close in this photo may be actually far away as the tele lens has squeezed the perspective.

The largest tower in the left belongs to the St John the Baptist and St Augustine church. There is not much space left from it but you can spot there just above the green roof a triangle with three statues –it is part of St Audoen church which is taken over by a Polish community in Dublin. If you go a bit further up along the left edge of the frame you may spot several diagonal lines which are part of a huge tilted cylinder made of glass: it is the modern building of the Dublin Convention Centre. If you now go to the very end of the right side you will see several yellow cranes on the horizon. They are already in Dublin Port which is at the very east end of the town (we are standing west from the city centre looking east). Further behind the cranes you can spot the Irish Sea and the horizon line. There are ferries connecting Dublin for example with Liverpool, the closest destination across the Irish Sea is probably Holyhead in Wales. The highest structure in the right is some sort of antenna. I have no idea what it is. But just touching it behind you see a gray spire of the St Andrew church which is in the very centre of the old town and which is not a church anymore but it hosts now the main Tourist Information centre in Dublin. If it sounds surprising to you I can tell you that there is another church in the city centre which was converted into an elegant restaurant “The Church” (not visible in this photo). A bit to the left and down from the antenna you can spot a cute charming little tower with a green little dome. This is a tower of Dublin Castle. This particular tower belongs to a part which is more a palace than an actual castle. There is not much left from the old castle. One out of four towers remained –not visible in this photo though. In the very centre of the photo you can spot two similarly shaped gray towers. The higher one is the Christ Church Cathedral, one of the two most important churches in Dublin. The second tower is currently a museum with an exposition on the Viking times in Dublin: Dublinia. Far in the distance in the centre of the image, surely more than one hour walk from the towers you can spot a large white wheel. It was constructed pretty recently in Dublin and it is actually so far away from the city centre that not much is visible when you are riding it. It is closer to the port. Almost touching the wheel at its bottom left side is a gray building with a tiny blue inscription. It says “the O2” and it is a wonderful modern concert hall. I have listened there to Britney Spears, Pink, Elton John and Bryan Adams. Very very far in the distance at the upper right side of the wheel you can see a tiny white tower. It is a lighthouse which is really far away from city centre on a peninsula in the part of the town called Howth. What else? You can find here a fragment of the new harp-shaped bridge over river Liffey. It is a white diagonal line going from St Augustine church tower down right in direction of Christ Church Cathedral. I was extremely lucky to have such a good weather at this POV but I still regret that the visibility was not a bit better. There is some fog visible on the horizon. Still it was probably one of just few good weather days this year. The sky was clear but, as it is often the case in Ireland, there was also a terribly strong cold wind.

I have never seen DUBLIN from this POV!
Lots of elements to be seen and enjoyed... a real mixture of all architectural styles!

this could very easily be made into some sort of jigsaw puzzle. has so many little colorful pieces to it. a little bit of this, a little bit of that!
I find my eye scanning all areas of the frame.
keeps me busy and keeps me interested to find more.

Hi Mariusz,
the flat perspective because of the tele lens, squeezes all the buildings with varied architectural styles, in a very attractive way and with a magnificent graphics.
There is many graphical wealth in the composition, and we can spend a lot of minutes watching the great quantity of elements that you have included in the framing.
The top of the needle of the tower is cut, I suppose that you could not use another angle a bit more opened to catch her totally, but this small detail does not spoil the composition.

Hi dear Mariusz

Now this is a view of Dublin I've never seen, and I've been in the Guinness building a fair few times ;) The colours are so beautiful and strong, so unlike what I usually picture that part of Dublin to look like. And oh how the skyline has changed in the time since I've been there. Great definition and something really unique, thanks for sharing it.

This is an amazing panorama of this interesting city. I like the fact that there are no tall buildings, which can spoil the look on the historic part of Dublin, yet strangely look ancient tower on background of modern buildings:) Actually, this is a great presentation in Dublin, and interesting note to the photo. this is truly a rare photo of Dublin where there are all the main monuments. The antenna I believe serves for the diffusion of signal of radio and television. Incredible, as always, the perfect sharpness and the beautiful light that allows us to appreciate all the details, even the smaller and far. The light haze on the hills not preclude to enjoy this wonderful view. Perhaps if you raised the camera a bit, you could add in the composition also the top of the first bell, but even so the picture is perfect. Congratulations, especially for the interesting notes!

interesujaca pocztowka z Dublina. Sporo tu roznorodnych stylow i budowli. Dzwigi w tle swiadcza, ze wciaz cos sie buduje. Solidne informacje. Fajny, wysoki POV miales, o tym cieciu z gory nie bede mowil, juz to zrobili inni. Obrobka bdb.

A great view on this plane closed upon the historical center of the city, which shows a nice contrast between the roofs and towers of the main religious buildings, cranes also emerge from the bottom.
A very sharp image with details to enjoy guided by your excellent note, the brightness and colors are also great.

The squezzed up perspective creates a density in this picture. We see spires & tall cranes literally vying for the sky. The only thing which perhaps breaks the verticals is the Ferris wheel. The brick houses in the near FG...I find attractive. A fine detailed note giving us a visual guide of Dublin!

I know all of those buildings, but would never have dreamed of seeing them all together like this. Some of my favourite places all together in one wonderful image. Roof-tops of the city combined with cranes and ferris-wheel, tall towers and red roof-tiles houses.
And there is a typical smog hanging as in any big city.
Taken well from a high POV.
