Photographer's Note
*scanned image*
It was my first trip to Iceland, late in the summer of 2004. I was on my way (alone) to Arkansas (US) from Finland and had decided to skip the aeroplane as much as possible.
It had always been a dream of mine to go to Iceland, and finally, at the age of 22, I stepped onto that most magnificent island.
Armed with my 20 year old Nikon F401s, I travelled across the island in one week and fell totally and completely head over heels in Love with that piece of land stranded on the Atlantic.
This is one of the sights that made me scream 'STOP THE CAR' to my fellow traveller driving the car. We had met on the boat leaving the Faroe Islands, and he was kind enough to give me a lift across the island.
We'd left from Seydisfjordur and driven along the ring road, aka Route 1, all the way around to Reykjavik. As I/we still had a few days before the plane took off for DC, we decided we'd have a look at the Southern part of the country.
It was already late in the summer and the temperatures sank below zero at night, and the sun appeared to remain closer to the horizon during the whole day giving everything a quite interesting colour. The grass and other flora shone with reddish tones making the earth less green and more terra-cotta. The kind of scenery I'd never seen before outside of my birth-country.
As we approached one of the glaciers in the South, my heart sang with a song of discovery.
I'd seen these on TV but never, and I mean never, could I have imagined one to be so beautiful in 'real Life".
We were driving along the black paved road and as it came closer and closer, my eyes grew wider and wider. I checked the map and saw there was a smaller road leading up to the Mýrdalsjökull and I asked him to turn onto it. As he did, I saw this pond and this reflection and I exclaimed 'stop the car!'.
I wasn't going to let such a sight go uncaptured!
I hopped out from the car, and being a TrekkEr at heart even before discovering the website, I included the road on the left in the picture, just to show a bit more of the context and possibilities offered on site :D
As you'll notice, the road appears to go towards the glacier, and in the WS you'll find that it does indeed lead right up to it. I would be grateful if you could tell me whether that shot (in the WS) is worthwhile posting as a separate entity in itself.
No cropping, no nothing besides for compression/resizing and sharpening. Talking of compression, it breaks my heart to see the picture loose as much quality as it does when I save if for web in PS CS2. I always end up having to 'trick' it by increasing the saturation and making it really dark so that it keeps the original colours. I don't particularly appreciate that... any solutions?
An advance Thank You to those amongst You who take the time to criticise and/or comment!

Hello Julia,
A very pretty sight particularly with regard to before plan.
Superb hot colour gradations.
A light which gives reflections excquis in this limpid water.
A quite complete comment
Excellent pov and framing.

Hei Julia,
The colours are so intensive here. A real million euro scene! And contrast between yellow/red and blue/white is so strong especially as the pool brings them so close to each other.
Yes, autumn foliage scenes are notoriously hard to compress for JPG format. One way to relieve these problems is to use less sharpening, or sharpen only key areas.
PS. I like the WS, though it's nowhere close to this one. Too saturated, and the sign could be closer to the edge.

Hi Julia
Very good quality for a scanned image. I like the reflection as it is well captured. The colours seem a little oversaturated but still work well overall. Nice composition.

Bravo et bon WE
Tout de bon :))))

Dear Julia,
It's really a great scenery you managed to capture here! The colors are so astonishingly well capture, I can literally feel a kind autmn "indian summer" atmosphere, but unfortuntely never had the "real life" experience. The composition is also perfect. The water surface is pefectly place to reflect astonishingl well the mountains, maybe even somehow clearer then the direct view! To include the road was also a great idea. I guess that one the original paper version one can see the stone bridge on the left much clearer, which would give some kind of additional point of reference ...
... so to me it's just a great picture!
All the best, Mike

Nice to see you back on TE, Julia. A stunning shot, maybe the best I have seen from you so far. The colours, the composition, the depth, the reflection which darkens the sky! Absolutely first class image, and the scan quality is good.

Hard to believe this is a scan - you did a great job. The composition is marvellous, and that reflection is one of the brightest and clearest I've ever seen. The colour of the vegetation is astounding. A truly lovely shot that gives an enormous sense of depth and open space. Thanks for the excellent notes, too.

Hi Julia, amazing landscape. The final result from the scanned image seems great and I wish I could have the same results with my old images. The saturation seems right to me and the colors make the image very attractive. I love the contrasts with the iceberg in the background and the reflections on the lake are lovely in contrast with the surrounding yellows. Gorgeous!
Have a good weekend,

I think I would have yelled the same thing upon seeing this perfect reflection. The blue sky against the orange grass looks marvelous and really catches my eye. Complementary colors always catch my eye. I very glad you included that little part of the road as it gives us a better sense of the place like you mentioned. Do you know if they filmed the beginning of the movie Batman Begins along this road? It looks like it to me.
Regards,
Ryan
P.S. I have the same problem when saving for web. Some picture look pretty close, but others look way off. I don't have a solution. I sometimes play the guessing game, changing the photo so that it might turn out right. I usually just end up not posting the photos that change a lot after saving for web.

A beautiful scenic impression from Iceland, Julia. The deep and vivid September colors make a fine foreground layer, and the opening with the reflecting pool is beautifully used to amplify the dignified presence of the grand mountain range in the back. The quality seems to be not all that bad, considering it's a scan and bearing in mind the rich amount of detailed foreground textures. Good notes, too.

Very nice composition! And the red and yellow "ruska" colors are magnificent and exagerated by the blue. Very nicely spotted!
In my opinion the road does not add very much to the image. But it is not a distraction either for me.
I believe the "peak" we see in this shot is Iceland's highest point.
I don't think your WS adds anything to this picture. The rocks along the road are a nice fomrtaion, but other than that this picture contains much more artisticly and information also. I think we had lunch just next to where your WS shot was taken. :-)

Hi, this is amazing! Awesome colors and nice clear reflection. I also like the workshop image although it lacks a little sharpness and is not as amazing as this one.
I had the same problem with Photoshop's "Save for Web," so I started using "Save As" instead and manually entering the highest quality number possible without going over the file size limit.

Absolutely magnificent...
The reflection is perfectly positioned and the overall POV is great.
Colors are good but not perfect, a bit foggy on the "real" mountains on the right - don't know if they're better in the original.
Thank you for such an interesting note. It just makes your photo even more appealing.
Great great "work" with this one...
