Photographer's Note
This is another one of those subjects I knew about before leaving Canada, in preparation for Iceland.
I did a lot of research for abandoned subjects, and I found this ship online. So you know what I had to do, I hunted it down. Clicking on the MAP feature will show you how remote this area is, its far far away from the main tourist roads - and worth every bit of effort finding it.
This steel ship is from Norway, completed in 1912. Originally it was a whaling ship and it operated in that realm until after WWII. When more and more restrictions and laws were enforced for whaling, the ship switched to fishing Herring off the coasts of Iceland.
It was run aground in 1981 and has been left here ever since.
There are a couple more photos in the WS showing its rust, its holes, its damage. I may post another main post as i have many shots to share. Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoy these abandoned subjects.

Bonjour, cher Craig,

Hi Craig,
A fascinating note about this old ship and well done you for managing to track it down. In our modern "eco-friendly" world it seems pretty dumb and irresponsible just to run a ship aground when you have no further use for it - a bit like just dumping your old car at the side of the road somewhere - but I guess little thought was given to the environment in 1981.
Three lovely photographs, each well composed and taken in lovely soft light and with rich colours and exceptional detail and sharpness.
Brilliant!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Craig
Not many people appreciate the beauty of ugliness. This has a great advantage for those who hunt for scenes like this. It will never be overcrowded with tourist where you have to wait quite some time before you can take a picture without disturbing tourist. I like all tree. Rusted brown and deep blue are always a great combination.
Have a nice day, groet Rob

Hi Craig,
Another lovely photograph of a deserted subject. Your wide angle lens has captured the detail and the scale of the ship and placed it at a perfect angle between the grass and that wonderful sky. Well done.

Richard

Hello Craig,
It seems there are so many empty and isolated areas in Iceland that anything could be abandoned anywhere without really disturbing anyone. It is of course for the benefit of weird photographers like you ;-), and in this case leaving the ship here was a lot cheaper than sailing it to south Asia to be cut to pieces.
Best wishes,
Gert

Hello Craig,
It looks lonely and forlorn this beached ex-whaler. I like the close framing and the angle of view. Excellent colour contrasts and fine rendering of the textural detail. A cheap way of getting rid of an unwanted ship but hardly environmentally friendly. Aren't there laws about such things? Anyway, there is no doubt it makes a very interesting topic for the intrepid photographer.

Bonjour Craig,
J'aime beaucoup cette photo. Lorsqu'on a la chance de profiter d'une épave de bateau hors de son élément naturel, il faut en profiter ce que tu as fait avec beaucoup de talent .

Hello Craig
Well, it had to happen! And who can blame you? This is a subject that anyone would want to photograph, but by the sound of it, few would find. Glad you did. Fine old vessel, and I wonder: did you go on board and down below??

Hi Craig,it's interesting to read your research before to start the trip, looking for something of different, interesting and...abandoned. Not the usual house but this time a ship, dead after many years working in the herring golden era, that i remember visiting the museum in the north of Iceland. 3 beautiful pics showing us the best details. Have a nice evening and thanks,Luciano

Hello Craig
I was thinking you have a special radar for these subjects - of course google helped you out, haha. Anyway, it`s a magnificent photo and even more so when I read in your note that it is an old Norwegian whaling ship. I`m curious to find out more about the ship. I guess to most people, leaving a ship like this would be seen as a bad way to get rid of the ship, environmentally speaking. Well, we photographers think differently. Lovely rusty details and a wonderful, blue sky. Excellent:) Thanks a lot for sharing this one, Craig!
Greetings, Erling

Hello Craig,
Really cool photo of this old ship, the white parts stand out fantastically from the blue sky and the dark reddish tone of the hull adds really well to the overall colour palette. Excellent photo and composition.

Hello Craig
Long time since I have been here on TE ....
So you made it to wonderful Iceland, a country I fell in love with on two successive visits in autumn 2015 and winter 2016
Amazing capture of this old steel ship. You where absolutely right to veer of the beaten path. In Iceland the best sight are hidden away.
But tell me, is it as bad as some say with the masses of tourists now in Iceland?
have a great time

sad end of this old warrior, the color of ship´s hull is interesting and contrast very well with the grass and sky. Great composition, my friend.

Pity it was left to rust, it could be salvage for metal-scrap or do something else for the environment, Craig - but it provided a good subject for yet an intriguing photo.
POV was well selected with part of the sea shown on the far side.
Have a nice new day, actually night now on your side of the globe.

Hello Craig, You are really crazy with these abandoned things. To look for the such wrecks before the trip! This one looks fascinating. The main picture is fantastic composition and great view against the blue sky.

Hi Craig,
So strange to see grass growing all around the shit. As if shae had deliberately rushed as far inland as she could. Looks great on Icelandic sunshine. Workshop pictures reveal that rust never sleeps.

Hello Craig,
I wonder how you can do research for abandoned subjects ...
I doubt you will find them in travel guides.
Strange that they never made this large ship of Norway seaworthy again.
The red rust colour blends nicely with the blue sky and with the white upper part of the ship.
It really looked like a very bright day.
Best regards, Paul

This is certainly not a typical photo I can find in a tourist brochure so I'm grateful for your love of abandoned subjects. Your posts show places in different light, almost different dimension.
Great pov and use of wide angle lens.
Best wishes

Hello Craig,
Missed this one ... so glad I noticed it!
It is a sad subject yet something that attracts us irresistibly!
This view seems sadder as the boat doesn't look to be so ruined as it does in the w/s, and, therefore, it looks like a ship that has just been abandoned because of its age!
There are some fine textural details and a great angle!
I wonder who is responsible for the cost of this ship. Is it just a payout by the insurers? There must be a story here!
Kind regards,
Bev :-)

HI Craig
A marvellous warm cold color contrast between the rusty red ship and the blue sky. Good sharpness and a superb upward pov. The headland at far left nicely continues the line of the ship. Tfs!

Ciao Craig
hai fiutato e braccato il soggetto e sei riuscito a trovarlo, un gran risultato.
Se non si vedesse quel poco di mare, si potrebbe dire che la barca naviga sull'erba.
Interessanti foto nel ws.

Hello Craig,
I love it! Looking at the WS photos reveals that this is BA 64's best foot forward. Do you know if it was run aground deliberately?
