Photographer's Note

Picturesque bonsai-like tree over Upland Katharo, Dikti Mountain, Crete.
The plateau Katharo is located at a height of 1200 meters over sea 12 km east from the plateau of Lassithi.
In Katharo there are only a few houses but without any permanent residents. Only seasonal residents are shepherds. They produce small quantities of vegetables and fruit for their own needs only. Thousands of local sheep and goats generate dairy products of the highest quality The electricity here is produced by generators only. All land in Katharo belongs excusively to the community of Kritsa which allows the residents of Katharo to use it or to build in it. Katharo is also interesting because of the paleontological discoveries of elephant fossils. Every year, in winter, heavy snowfall covers all houses. So, the flora and the fauna of Katharo is unusual, You can find there rare plants and flowers , for example unique kind of minoan cypress.
In Katharo there are three taverns served local products of excelent quality like grilled lamb or mizithra, soft white cheese. The taverns open when the shepherds move their flocks up to the plateau.
