Photographer's Note

The Church of Panaghia Kapnikarea (Greek: Εκκλησία της Παναγίας Καπνικαρέας) or just Kapnikarea (Greek: Καπνικαρέα) is one of the oldest churches and one of the most important Byzantine monuments of Athens. The complex tretrastyle cross-in-square church was built sometime around the year 1050, on the foundations of an ancient temple dedicated to the worship of a goddess, as was common with the early Christian churches.

It is located in the downtown of the modern city of Athens, right in the middle of the bustling shopping area of Ermou street, in the Monastiraki district.

"...like the beautiful 11th Century Church of Kapni Karea on Ermou, have finally once again become the beautiful center-piece of a pedestrian walkway after being an impediment to Athenian drivers for the last twenty years because they had to drive around it." Matt Barrett
