Photographer's Note

I stayed late at work today and then went to the supermarket. On the way home I saw a group of "Artemis", the Cultural Association of Leros posing for three photographers against a view of Ayia Marina and the Castle. I pulled the brakes of my bike and asked if I could take a picture too. The picture of this group and the president of the Association (far right) is in the WORKSHOP.

The Cultural Association "Artemis" has hundreds of members on the island, a small, dedicated community that practises traditional dances once a week, teaches dances to young children at the four primary schools of the island every Saturday, gives performances on Leros and is frequently invited to festivals all over Greece and around the world too. They are proud of having danced in all the continents.

The Cultural Association of Leros chose the name "Artemis" because the Greek goddess was especially worshipped on the island in antiquity.

The costumes they are wearing in the picture represent Thrace. Last weekend, the whole group -more than a hundred dancers- gave a performance with dances from that region of northern Greece in the Theatre in Lakki.

Thank you for visiting
