Photographer's Note

Here you see one of the biggest and best preserved Venetian castles in Crete, La Fortezza in Rethymno. Its contstruction started on 1540, in order to protect the town from the attacks of famous pirate Barbarosa and the Turks. It took the (forced) work of thousands of the habitants of the region and about ten years to be completed. Its walls and and bastions are still in perfect condition. In the interior there is not much to see besides the ruins of the old commander's house, that once was a beautiful building with 49 doors and 81 windows. Around the walls you can walk in the picturesque alleys of the old town.
