Photographer's Note

This is a small store window display in southern Germany during the Christmas holiday season. While most people visit Germany and Europe during summer, December is a great time to visit because of the colorful Christmas markets (see PixelTerror's "Christmas Markets & Lights" theme).

Although now a hyped tourist item, the Nutcracker (German "Nussknacker") actually has a 400+ year history in not just Germany but also Switzerland, France, and England. The Nutcracker and Mouse King story by E.T.A. Hoffmann in 1816, along with Tschaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite ballet in 1891, brought it fame. According to German folklore, they were given to bring your family good luck and to protect your home.
