Colditz Castle

The next day, the last of our holidays, we visited the small town of Colditz, located between Leipzig and Dresden, and Colditz Castle (Schloss Colditz). The castle was first mentioned in 1046, the current castle was built during the Renaissance. The castle became better known internationally, when it was called Oflag IV-C and used as a prisoner-of-war camp during World War II for Allied officers, who had repeatedly attempted to escape from other camps, which was inspiration for the 1970s BBC TV-series ‘Colditz’. The castle is now used as a museum.
