Photographer's Note

Many Germans and almost all foreigners never had a 500 DM banknote in their hands. The third series (issued from 1961 until 1990) showed portraits taken from paintings of recognized historic value. Three of the seven back sides showed buildings: Holstentor at Lübeck (50 DM), Eltz Castle (500 DM) and Limburg Cathedral (1000 DM).
This here is Eltz Castle, visible only on last moment when you approach it hiking through the narrow valley of Elz, a Moselle tributary creek. It was begun shortly after 1100 A.D., first mentioned in 1157 and never conquered nor destroyed. Three lines of the Eltz family shared it as common property, and they're still in possession of it.

Weather left room for improvement when I took this on slide film with Canon A1 in 1985.
