Photographer's Note
Holocaust Memorial – Berlin
Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas, Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.
I rejoin Lars on our European trip of this summer with my impressions of our visit to Berlin.
I start with three pictures of the Holocaust Memorial.
These are my addition to Lars' photographs (https://www.trekearth.com/gallery/photo1587918.htm) of this impressive monument.
There was a long discussion in German politics before this memorial, designed by the architect Peter Eisenman, was inaugurated on 10 May 2005.
De 2711 concrete slabs (stelae) are places in a grid pattern on a sloping field.
The stelae are not all of the same height. At the edges you can look over it and in the center of the memorial you are swallowed by tall blocks.
The monument in the heart of Berlin close to the Brandenburg Tower is an impressive testimony to these horrors from WW II.
The monument is certainly photogenic, yet it is difficult to capture the oppressive atmosphere in photographs.
With these three pictures, I'm going to try to give you an impression of this.

Hallo Rob,
Geweldig gedaan!
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello Rob,
I had the same experience here, that it is a very photogenic monument but for some reason not easy to find the best angles. I was looking for photos similar to this and managed a few that I liked. This one has a very good play of light and shaded parts that form an attractive pattern. The persons describe the size of the stones in this part. The WS show us the deep perspectives of the long corridors inside the monument.
Kind regards,
Gert

Daag Rob,
Heel goed gedaan, bedankt
Prettig weekend uit Vlaanderen gewenst,
John

Hi Lars,
The tight frame is putting the memorial in evidence. The point of view is shopwing the details of the Holocaust Memorial. There is a good contrast between the colours of the picture. Have a nice day.

Hallo Rob,

Hello Rob, three shots that give us a good impression of the monument. The figures really help with our appreciation of the scale.
Is the ground flat? Probably due to the light and shade I see an undulating surface.
I guess to children, it might feel like a maze.
Thanks for sharing, kind regards, Jean.

Bonjour, cher ami Rob,

Hello Rob, This memorial gives a lot oof opportunuities for intersting compositions. Its construction is so simple but powerful. Here fantastic p[lay of lights and shadows. Workshops are also nice but more ordinary. This one is superb.

Dear Rob,
Excellent portrayal of this expressive and 'tasty' memorial, which reflects the horrors in a very plain way. I also took some photos there some 10 years ago and found it very photogenic.
Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hello Rob,
You have created some excellent artistry from this sombre monument. This is a very well created, abstract, geometric design. I wonder how it would have felt in b&w, without the figures - suddenly, it looses the 3D effect!
Each of your shots has a different impact and I imagine, though this is my favourite, that the others could take centre stage when in a different mood!
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hi Rob,
Wonderful view of this famous memorial. You have a good angle, and sunshine makes nice rectangular patterns on the stones. People are well placed.

Hello Rob,
This seems to be a tricky memorial to get a really effective composition, but I like all of your photos. This main one focuses on the slabs, and the people look small compared to them. In the WS photos, I was surprised to see that the ground actually undulates, like a concrete wave. Take care!

Hallo Rob, the thousands concrete slabs symbolize the tombs of the deceased persons. That memorial pays tribute to the victims of that tragedy. There are alleys between the blocks, the children use them to play hide and seek. Fine colors, good sharpness, regards.

Hallo Rob
I also visited this site and was disgusted with people ignoring the signs in several languages to please not treat the memorial as a playground and jump from pillar to pillar and to be generally respectful. I think you would like this response by an even more annoyed Israeli. Tfs!

A place that leaves every visitor with a profound impression, Rob, a monument to remember - and never forget.
Three pictures which show and convey well the different angles when walking through the stones.
My best regards,
Ike
