Photographer's Note

After Weimar we moved up north east to the grand old capital of Saxony. Dresden is a city that was high on our itinerary, a place we really wanted to visit.

DRESDEN is the capital of Saxony and taking all things into account, it was probably our personal favourite city on our summer Rundfahrt.

One side of the river is the Neustadt, which has a cool urban vibe. The other side is the baroque Altstadt, which still shows the scars of the senseless allied fire bombings of 1945, but has now been restored to (at least some of) its former glory.

THIS PICTURE shows the Frauenkirche, which is a proud symbol of the city's resurgence.

Built in the 18th century, the church was destroyed in the bombing of 1945. First the ruins were left as a war memorial. It was rebuilt after the reunification of Germany.

The surrounding Neumarkt square with its many valuable baroque buildings was also reconstructed in 2004.

This is the view from the Neumarkt on a good sunny day.
