Le Viaduc est du type pont en arc, multiples traveés, il franchit la rivière Suize, et sert de pont-rail (Ligne Paris-Bâle).
Dimensions: 600 m de long, 50 arches sur une hauteur de 52 m.
L' architecte est Emile Decombe, l'ouvrage fut commencé en 1855 et conduit en un temps record : 15 mois suffisent pour mettre en œuvre 60 000 m³ de maçonnerie, grâce à 2500 ouvriers et 300 chevaux qui travaillent nuit et jour .
Son imposante majesté en fait la figure emblématique de la ville de Chaumont.

The type of the Viaduc is an arch bridge, with multiple spans, crossing the river Suize, and is used as a railroad bridge.
Mesures: 600m legth, 50 arches, 52m height.
The architect is Emile Decombe, the work began in 1855 and it took only 15 months to achieve 60 000 m³ of brick-work and masonry, with 2500 men and 300 horses working day and night on the site.
The viaduc is a very significative building of the city of Chaumont, Haute-Marne.

Magnifique photo avec cet alignement parfait des arches. On a devant les yeux 500 mètres et 42 arches qui se répêtent. Sacrée perspective ! Le noir & blanc est parfait pour cette photo et les garde-fous ainsi que les ombres ajoutent un bien beau contraste qui fait de cette prise une magnifique composition.

Superbe photo. Toutefois sur le plan purement graphique (et donc du cadrage) deux petites corrections pourraient être apportées ; en effet dommage que la première arche soit coupée et dommage que les balustrades ne démarrent pas juste dans les coins inférieurs droit et gauche.

Tout élément perturbateur a été écarté pour ne garder que l'essentiel. Profondeur,perspective, Lumière,répétition des motifs au service d'une ligne de fuite qui nous emmène très loin.

The light directly from the side casting rhythmic shadows and showing the texture of the stones is the thing that really makes this image, but of course the perspective and subject are great too.

Impressionnée par cette perspective à perte de vue ! il faut un regard perçant pour fixer le point de fuite à l'infini :o) Limite on se croirait emprisonné dans un jeu vidéo sans sortie possible à reculons.

Le graphisme est superbe non seulement pour l'enfilade des voûtes mais aussi pour la très belle opposition entre les droites et les courbes, entre les ombres et la lumière.
Et la gamme des gris est pleine de belles nuances.
Une image vraiment réussie à laquelle il ne manque à mon goût qu'un personnage marchant dans l'allée pour apporter une note humaine à cette scène de pierre et de fer.
Bravo !

cette photo me fait pensé a une que j'avais faite a mes tout début ( héhé c'est a dire il n'y a pas si longtemps que ca ;-) ) "lueur bleue" j'avais aussi un peu coupé la premiere arche! mais ca ne gache pas la composition, j'aime beaucoup!

Belle perspective et cadrage parfait, on n'en voit pas le bout. Je trouve cet ouvrage très curieux voire très intéressant.

Excellent perspective shot, the symmetry, railings and shadows really draw the eye into the shot and the clarity of the arches and stone work is impressive. I might have included a bit more of the first arch, but this is a great shot, very well done.

This is marvelous in more than one way, Viviane. The perspective is great - the symmetric recurrence of vaults is facinating - the light in an angle of almost 90 degrees from the left, showing the structure and creating pure shadows is superb - everything is very "clean" and the B&W adds to that feeling. Well seen and very well done!
It's an amazing and beautiful piece of work - your note is very informative - and more amazing is, that I have a magnified photo of it (taken by me in 1974) on my living-room wall. I had to go and look real close, as I hadn't observed any walkway between the arches. Now I see - there must be one on both the lower and the medium level. On the Chaumont site I looked at a video over the viaduct and could spot from where I took my photo...;o)!
Only this morning I looked at my magnifications - they are six from different places, all made from color slides photographed around the mid 70s with an old Agfa camera - and thought about uploading one or two on TE. However that includes scanning of slides, not my cup of tea, so I rejected the idea. Now I know which one should go first!!

This is a most extraordinary picture Viviane. The repeating spans makes one feel like really going in there. One can not take the eyes away - it is almost hypnotic. Thank you so much for sharing and an informative note too.

Excellent depth! The black and white really works nicely here. Great tones. Great texture to the stone. It really extends the image with this great perspective. The shadows make great lines across the floor. The different colored keystones with their numbers really adds to the repeating pattern and makes me want to count. It seems a little tilted. Just a bit counter-clockwise to fix it, perhaps. But it is just a small thing. This is an excellent view through the arches. Extends the effect ahead and also around and behind me. Very nice.

J'ai deux questions à poser: d'abord pourquoi le choix du B&N, est-ce que la nature de la pierre relativement ancienne ne méritait pas la couleur? ensuite pourquoi avoir coupé le haut de la première arche?
Il est intéressant de constater que l'effet de perspective (bien réussie) ne donne pas l'impression qu'il y a 30m entre chaque arche! Aurons nous une photo de la rivière Suize vue du viaduc?

Difficile de critiquer une photo pareil car on est proche de la perfection !
Alors je vais me contenter de dire le seul léger petit defaut à mes yeux , la photo penche un peu sur la droite mais c'est vraiment mon coté perfectioniste qui parle, car c'est vraiment sublime comme prise de vue et le noir et blanc est parfait pour cette scène !

Sur la vignette ça ne disait pas grand chose, mais quand j'ai ouvert. wowwww! quelle image. Toutes ces lignes, droites, diagonales, courbes, exercice de symétrie et de perspective, un délice pour un professeur de géométrie (que je ne suis pas).

Quelle construction étonnante. Je crois que la perspective est parfaite : difficile de faire plus efficace car l'angle de vue, les formes et les lumières y contribuent tous.
J'aime beaucoup le choix du noir et blanc et la lumière rasante sur la pierre. Sacré présence ! Une vraie travée de cathédrale !

Later is better than never...I find the perspective fabulous (i like the number of each arch which decrease to infinity). The choice of B&W is also judicious and suits perfectly to strong shadows. I love it!

Excellent titre et extraordinaire perspective!
On retient son souffle, tant l'image est belle. D'abord, la répétition des arches numérotées, que l'on croit partir vers l'infini dans des nuances de gris magnifiques. Ensuite cette perspective des garde-fous, noirs au milieu du gris. Aussi, la très belle lumière rasante sur les murs, qui accentue leur présence. Cette photo est vraiment impressionnante! Je ne savais pas que l'on pouvait monter là-haut. Vous l'avez fait, Viviane, Bravo!

what a great perspective it keeps going on and on... you have also a great timing as you where here all alone that really adds as you don't see that very often in such cool spots... but this is a good place to wait sometime for a 'clear' shot i think...
the B&W is almost a must in this shot very evoking photograph...
