Photographer's Note

Here is abbey church St Pierre of NANTUA about which I spoke the last time to you.
The unit is rather impressive and I had to make some efforts to put everything in the image, even with my wide angle of 18 mm.
I rectified the verticals somewhat.
Fortunately it was at the hot hours of the day with a very reduced number of visitors.

For impassioned of history :

It is in VIIe century, known as the legend, that holy Amand, bishop of Maastricht, melt the abbey of Nantua in a village of fishermen.
Recent excavations made it possible to update a vast church préromanesque, where the emperor Charles-the-Bald person would have been buried.
The abbey is attached to Cluny into 959. The monastery will count 20 monks in 1261.
The church dedicated to Saint Pierre is secularized under the Revolution and becomes parish church Saint Michel.

The church in Latin cross is directed East-West. In XIIe and XIIIe centuries, the church is altered.
The chorus is rebuilt at the time Gothic and two vaults are high at XVe and XVIIe centuries.
The Sainte-Anne chapel presents a network of blind arcades detached of the ceiling and a retable of XVe century.
The original bell-tower, cut down during Terror while 10 000 volumes of archives were destroyed, was rebuilt at the XIXe in the style of Cluny.

The abbey church is classified Historic building.
Nantua was a long time a town of mégissiers, tawers and tanners, clothiers, tisserands and épingliers.
Later they were establishments functioning thanks to the driving force of the rivers: sawmills, beaters...
The abbey church contains the statue of St Crepin, Patron of the shoe-makers and in the chorus a major work of the romantic painter Eugene Delacroix appears: St Sebastien helped by the holy women.

We can see there an organ rare, imposing instrument of 42 plays and 2883 wood and tin pipes.
It remains the only intact organ of Nicolas Antoine Lété, installed organ builder of the King in Mirecourt in 1832.
The abbey church accomodates the international Festival of music of Haut-Bugey.
