Normandy American Cemetery
Another photo from the place where Operation Overlord took place in the weeks following D-Day on 6 June 1944. Close to Omaha Beach, near the town of Colleville-sur-Mer, is the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, that honours the American troops who died in Europe during World War II.
Two days after the invasion the U.S. First Army established a temporary cemetery close to the location of the present-day cemetery. After the war, the U.S. were granted a perpetual concession to the land by the French government. The cemetery contains 9,387 American military dead.

Hello Lars,
It's a beautiful photo from a rather depressing place. The neat lawn and the long lines of white crosses are nevertheless graphically attractive and provide you with many fine diagonals. The tree is well placed and a few visitors give life to this sad place with so many dead.
Kind regards,
Gert

brazilians had some military cemeteries in italy but our government sent the bones of everybody back to brazil, because this would be probably the desire of the dead soldiers. nowadays those cemeteries are parks paying homage to them only.
It is ever impressive to see these military cemeteries, we can thing about madness of the war.

Hi Lars
Nothing shows the folly of war quite like these cemeteries, and your photo really shows the scale of the loss of life here. Beautifully sharp and perfect light and colors

Hello Lars,
This graphically illustrates the dual nature of mankind which can be incredibly creative, or also as depicted here, incredibly destructive. Good sharpness and a sad repetition of the myriad of white commemorative crosses. The sidelight from the left works well here. Tfs!

Hello Lars,
the American soldiers were surely brave and their sacrifice was essential, but is it very sad to see the crosses signifying so many young lives interrupred so far away from their homeland. After all the devastating events and millions of lost lives in WWII, it's so disheartening that no lesson was obtained and brutal wars and conflicts are still taking place in our world. Your picture is lovely and peaceful, it has beautiful colours that the soldiers missed long ago. Each cross seems to be sending us a message. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a great weekend,
Ourania

Hello Lars!
I don't know how you deal with that sad theme in the Netherlands. In Germany, they introduced "Volkstrauertag", a national day of mourning for the victims of the wars, at first on Reminiscere Sunday (five Sundays before Easter) from 1926 on, then from 1952 until now on the second Sunday before first Advent Sunday.
A well chosen perspective: the white crosses seem to multiply far into eternity. A very few "casualties" in the beginning, but then...

Dag Lars,
mooie foto van deze onwerkelijke plaats. Al die esthetisch verantwoord geplaatste witte kruisen contrasteren zo heftig met de helse strijd die huier is gevoerd.
Groet,
Gerrit

Hello Lars,
Beside the history of this place, the rows of crosses placed in an attractive pattern, a military-orderly setting that it is most impressive sight.
Yet, light and shadows on the green lawn and trees gave special texture to the contrast which managed superbly. I also like that you managed the big tree in full view on right side.
A grandeur place to the heroes laid peacefully there.
Have a nice sunday,
Ike

Good day.
Interesting and good text, pleasant memory ...
Nice demonstrated part of Normandy American Cemetery, good osrtina, contrast and perspective, nicely captured the moment with the visitors and the clouds coming.
That leaves the cemetery and memories of war.

Hello Lars
The rows and rows of imaticulate white crosses tell a rather sad story here, but the setting is beautiful. The greens of the lawn and trees, the deep blue of the sea behind and the gorgeous sky above form a formidable trio to complete the crosses.
have a great time

Dag Lars,
Heel mooi foto werk, bedankt
Naar het schijnt is men deels benauwd van grafschennis door extreme groepen, wat al in bepaalde landen is gebeurd.
Groeten,
John

Hi Lars,
quite a sad view and yet very impressive composition. The repeated motif of the cross is stunning also because it is repeated so many times. Great light and colors: the shadows so long and the colors so well saturated. I see you have also timed this upload so well to the all saints holiday.
Very good idea, excellent work!

Lars, this impressive place copies the American cemeteries style with tombs on a lawn. It was built in tribute to the American soldiers died during the war for the peace. The excursion is rewarding and learn the war history to the visitors. Fine colors, good sharpness, instructive photo note, regards.
