Photographer's Note

Locomotives No. 7 and No. 8 of Chemin de Fer du Montenvers, a cogwheel line riding up from Chamonix to the Mer de Glace glacier, obviously withdrawn from service.
The line was opened in 1909 and operated with steam engines until 1953 when it was electrified. Distance is 5,1 km, with a considerable height difference of 871 m.

BTW: The tickets to Mer de Glace do literally bear the inscription VOYAGE MERDE, which is easily understandable even with limited abilities in French...

PS @ ikeharel: Another engine is standing on a pedestal in front of the Chamonix station, well renovated. This is only their backyard.
