Photographer's Note

These spectacular outcrops lie between the villages of Rustrel and Gignac in the Luberon in the south of France. The colour is due to the presence of ochre in the soil. At one time the red pigment was used as a dye and also in makeup. You are told to be careful as the rocks can badly stain your clothes. There are believed to be between 17 and 25 different shades. The rocks have also been formed into many different shapes.
