Photographer's Note

Another picture of the penal colony of the Iles du Salut in French Guyana, after this one.
This is on the biggest of the three islands, Ile Royale. The buildings ruins there have been cleaned and the plants growing in them removed, to prevent the remaining walls from disappearing.
The building were topped by a roof. The windows are rather high. The convicts would spend the night (and sometimes days) there, chained to their bunks at the ankle all the time.
I don't know what the metal piece was used for.
