Photographer's Note
Driving north on rout 6 along the eastern border of Finland, halfway between the cities of Imatra and Joensu in the karelian community of Parikkala one comes across a parking with a small snack kiosk. Walk behind the kiosk and you will find yourself in an unsuspected eerie world with hundreds of strange statues scattered in the woods. Especially on a rainy day this must be one of the scariest places to find.
Patsaspuisto as the place is called, is where Finnish sculptor Vejio Rönkkönen has created over 500 life size concrete statues of the period of over 50 years. Rönkkönen was a very secluded person and considered his art to be a means to communicate with the outer world.

Hi Daniel
Wow. That is an amazing sculpture but I must agree, really creepy too. I'm not sure what the emotion is here but I don't think is a good one. The photo is a wonderful portrait and one that catches the eye immediately. Fascinating place and photo. Thanks for sharing
Cheers

Hello Daniel,
What a very strange and fascinating "portrait". I was sure this was a real person with a heavy and original make-up. I never heard of this place, so your photos, note and link teach me something new today. There have been such odd artists here and there who have spent years creating very original installations (long before that word was generally used). following their inner voice, never caring what the critics would say. A very interesting contribution.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hello Daniel
A long time ago I must have passed this village. A long time before this amazing sculptures. I remember some watch tower on the Russian border, but I had preferred this fascinating pictures. Your close portrait gives a marvellous idea of the strong impact of Vejio Rönkkönen sculptures.

Hello Daniel,
This place, and this face, look like something out of a horror movie! I wonder what strange thoughts the artist has in his mind. Your close-up and tight crop maximize the scary effect of this particular statue. He doesn't look happy to be photographed. ;-)

Hello Daniel,
Oh, dear, somehow I don't think I'm going to be able to sleep tonight. :(
Somehow this statue looks just too "real" and those teeth and that penetrating eye definitely look very spooky. And to see a crowd of these "creatures" in a forest, as we see in your workshop picture, would be just a bit too much for me. Not a place I'd want to spend a night alone!
But, whatever we think of these sculptures, your photographs are both of excellent quality and, if they convey the atmosphere of the place so well, then that is proof of the quality of your pictures.
Excellent!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hello Daniel, it is really scary and thanks for the Workshop picture with the wider view. Also scary, I would be afraid :). In miniature it looks like someone from Omo from Ethiopia. Interesting picture and note.

Hello Daniel
Great picture & a great informative note. At first I'd thought this to be some kind of subculture tribal festival thing!
Good dof in the picture. The out of focus and slightly overexposed nose adds to the weirdness of it all.

Hi Daniel
Intriguing photo, very effective in extreme close-up. Looks eerily like a real person. Your interesting note explains all. We have something slightly similar - but not scary - here, near Melbourne, the William Ricketts Sanctuary, with figures in the forest all representing the aboriginal people and native wildlife:

Hello Daniel,
really strange view of this section of Patsaspuisto we can see in the WS.The close up view of one of the 500 hundreds life size concrete statues and especially its face make the image even more horror.

Hi Daniel,
Those teeth certainly catch attention! You were right to focus on them. Very efficient tight framing and short focus.

Hello Daniel,
Wow, so this is a sculpture, it looks very true to life, so I can imagine that it must be scary to walk among such works of art. Your close-up portrait of one of them is excellent with perfect sharpness.

Hi dear Daniel
Wow so shocking but also very appealing image from you.
Shallow expsore and bold cropping makes this image so attractive. Reflecting with your high sense and humors.
All the best and have a good day! Takero

Ciao dear Daniel
Oh wow, that's quite a scary looking sculpture. I love your choice to do the close up. We can account for every crack and every bit of texture in this ghoulish person's face. God look at those teeth! Love the moss growing out of the cracks too.
A great photo, of a genre which is totally out of your comfort zone.
Bonne amities

Hello Daniel,
This is a very striking portrait with fine details - but what I like best is the clever cropping that makes it so effective.
TFS,
May
