Photographer's Note
Ukonkivi is one of many islands in Inarijarvi (Lake Inari), one of the largest lakes in Finland. The island had special significance for the Sami as a place for ritual sacrifice. That's what we were told on one of the boat rides to the island that are offered regularly in the summer. There's an intensity of light in this shot that reminds me of some paintings by Gallen-Kallela: not so much as an artistic feat as a condition of time and place that gets registered.
