Photographer's Note
Hammershus was a strongly fortified castle on the northwestern corner of Bornholm island. Situated on rocky terrain 74 m above the Baltic Sea (!), the ruin is still surrounded by a circular wall measuring 750 m, making it one of the biggest ruins of all Scandinavia.
After losing Skåne province to Sweden, Hammershus was more close to Sweden and Germany than to the rest of Denmark. The castle often served as Danish state prison.
I still remember a note saying that for the members of the local garrison, the daily food ration comprised 6 litres of beer - which must have been very light then, perhaps 2.5 or 3 percent alcohol, but a beverage free of germs.
