Photographer's Note
I wanted to go out today and shot something for the scavenger hunt, but I'm in bed sick, so instead I found this picture inspired by Dave (davecall). I took this in Prague when I was about 13, so it's been awhile, I don't remember why a took it from this angle, probably because that was where I was standing, i don't remember the camera probably an old point and shoot one, but I do rember where it is, it's on The "Karl's Bridge" where loads of these portrait artist hang around.
I might be wrong, but don't you think that because the artist don't know their models they always paint sort of a standard female or male face with different hair on top? It's not to put them down, I just don't think you can draw an exellent portrait if you know nothing about the person in front of you...?
To show you my "skills" from back then I chose not to do any PP, except to add contrast to the drawing.

Hi Line, very good POV and angle here. Good compo in diagonal, the right part could be croped though. Well It's difficult to say, I personally think that a good portrayer must be able to catch expressions even from people it doesn't know, like a good photographer...

Nice angle. I can see what he has done so far. If the DOF is more shallow, the two would have stood out from the background. Nonetheless, i like the picture because of your POV and the colors too.

Hi Line
Yes - you are surely a photographer who comes around - while other seldom comes outside the island (Fyn) ;-) Great angle you got this situation in - I like the look of the model -and the start of that nice artwork - seams not to be "pre fabricated" ;-))
In fact do I have a little old photo with my self as model - perhaps should I post it for fun - it was taken in London back in 1984.
Thanks for sharing Line.

The tense attitude of the woman is well shown here.
And the composition is just perfectly dynamic.
Maybe can you crop a bit in the right.
A really good photography with an atmosphere.
Congrats, Line !

I definitely don't agree with you. I think that we can draw an excellent portrait of someone we don't know, as well as we can take an excellent photograph of a subject we have never seen before. It is exactly the same aproach.
In fact, I think that the most you are distanced from your subject, the more you are able to "see" things you would have never seen if you crossed his way everyday. As for the climber, it is much easier to see the form of the mountain from the plane rather than when he is climbing it.
Your photo is very nice. Thank you for sharing your thoughts,.

There's a timelessness to this shot Line that's very appealing-- probably because the subject matter is universal and there are no references in the frame that would 'date' the shot.
A shallow DOF has been mentioned; I don't know how effective that would be considering the short distance from the girl to the wall- that might have risked throwing the artist out of focus so I guess your lack of manual control was a good thing :)
I might have bent my knees a bit to use the girl's head to cover that bright thing behind her but at age 13 I was lucky if I could focus properly let alone get a photo worth posting here. Well done!

very nice, two in one shot here, the details are fine and the pose is scary, well done

Very impressive Line! You had talent even back then. This was nicely composed in the camera and looks good still. The artist's bag in the background right is a fine element. And I think the artist has captured the girl's mouth, so perhaps he is a cut above the rest in actually drawing the person sitting in front of him. Were you next? ;-)

Well, Line, I'm not a people photographer at all (but I have great admiration for those who are) - I don't particularly like to have my picture taken and I figure why would anybody else. To a certain extent I also agree with your summary of street painters' skills and about the difference it makes whether you have an emotional affinity to your subject or not - at least in your photo the mouth, nose and chin he drew so far look a bit generic to me. But your photo definitely has the overwhelming appeal that most of these scenes have - being able to look above the shoulder of the artist and instantly having more information available than the person who is being made the subject of the artwork. The cobblestone pavement and the wall make for a nice low-key background that does not distract from the scene you captured here. Well done, and thanks for contributing this one to my "artists" theme, it makes a great addition ;-)

very nice angle of shooting Line. i dont agree that these artists keep by heart some standard prototype. When i was in Kiev my personal experience showed that it depends on how clever the artist is , and how far can he capture some special characteristics of the face.
