Photographer's Note
I dedicate this shot to daddo (Klaudio Branko Dadich) who, I know ,has never totally broken the bonds with his roots, and always missed and loved the human relations, friendships in the old small neighbourhoods of ex-Ottoman cities in the Balkan Peninsula. I wish I could have taken a better one but anyway hope he'll like it.Plovdiv is the second largest city of Bulgaria after Sofia, and has been ruled by the Ottomans from 1364 until 1884.In 4 January 1878, Plovdiv was liberated from Ottoman rule by the Russian army and was within the borders of Bulgaria until July, the same year, when it became the capital of an autonomous Ottoman region of Eastern Rumeli. In 1885, it and Eastern Rumelia itself became part of Bulgaria. Those nearly four hundred years have many traces in the city such as this neighbourhood, in which all the houses and streets are typical old Turkish style buildings, of course all restored. The windows of the houses are so located that each lets the sun into the room. The cobble streets are also typical Ottoman style. The "Old Town" in Filibe (Plovdiv) reminded me the ancient village Cumalikizik of Bursa, the city where I live.

Merhaba Cagla Hanim,
This is lovely corner in Plovdiv, with the large cobblestones, high pavement and the massive tree growing next to the hose. The brilliant color of the building is certainly eye-catching, and at the same time offers a change from drab colors often presented in Bulgarian tows.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Merhaba Cagla, my dear friend. Thanks for your touching dedication and very expressive words. I discovered when in Safranbolu that the cobbles were known as Arnavut kaldırımları and of course I was happy to know as an Arnavut myself that the humble but effective way of making streets dry and firm in winter was an Albanian method which spread throughout the Ottoman lands. On my last visit to Sarajevo the streets of the Bascarsija were fixed after the damages from the war and they didn't follow the Arnavut method but cemented the stones into a solid, waterproof surface. When it rained we had to negotiate deep water and where the streets descended, the water flowed down into an ever deeper flow. It's a bad thing to ignore the wisdom of the old folk.
I had a cloudy day like this yesterday when I went on a trip into the Yarra Valley and didn't take many photos because of the glare and drab sky. In one of the coffee-table books I saw in a gift shop while there, I saw beautifully coloured and bright images of buildings, townships and wineries. I realized that most of the scenes with a golden glow were taken in late afternoon with the low sun shining directly at the points of interest. Unfortunately as tourists in a hurry we haven't the privilege like Izzet Bey to linger and choose over a longer stay. Yes, the light could have been more dramatic in your image but sometimes one has to one's best in difficult situations. Well chosen POV and lots of details. Best wishes. Klaudio.

Hi Cagla
I could have chosen a couple of other photos in your gallery, but i chose this one because i'm a big fan of such rustic scenes - and its so unique/different.
that road is looking rather rough! haha
but thats also part of its charm too.
interesting corner house set up too.
looking at it now, i wonder how it looked brand new many many years ago.
fantastic post
cheers
