--The monastery is a complex of cultural, dwelling and farming buildings which take about 8800 square meters. The Rila Monastery has an unique architecture. Outside, the monastery looks like a fortress. It has 24-meter stone walls which forms irregular pentagon. That’s why when some tourist enters the monastery’s yard from some of the two iron gates he is surprised by its architecture: arches and colonnades, covered wooden stairs and carved verandas and the 300-400 monastic cells. The Hreliov’s tower and the main church “The Nativity of the Virgin” cohabit at the center of the yard. This tower was created by the local feudal lord Hrelio in 1334-1335. A small church stays next to it and it is only a couple of years younger (1343). A bell-tower was added to the tower in 1844. The main church “The Nativity of the Virgin” was built in these times. Its architect is a master Peter Ivanovich, who worked on it in 1834-1837. The temple has five domes, three altars and two chapels. Maybe the most important thing in the church is the iconostasis which has incredible wood-carving. The wall-paintings were completed in 1846 by many masters from Bulgaria, but only Zahary Zagraph signed his paintings. In the church there are lots of icons created in XIV-XIX.,,,etc,,more,, here History Rila Monastery
The Rila Monastery was founded in the 30-th years of X century on the place of the Old Anchoress in Rila Mountain. While the monastery has been existing, it was many times rebuilt, destroyed and reconstructed. Today the Rila Monastery has had this appearance since the middle of the previous century. It is the biggest and the most respected Bulgarian monastery.
It is considered that the creator of the Rila Monastery is the first Bulgarian hermit Ivan Rilsky (876-946), he chose to live in this way as a method of spiritual perfection and a way to express his protest against the suppression of the high moral rules of the real Christianity. The Bulgarian saint was born in the 70-th years of IX century. He was a witness of the decline of the First Bulgarian Kingdom at the time of king Peter I and Saint Ivan Rilsky became the most respected saint in the Orthodox Christianity in that time. At the time of the Byzantine slavery the established brotherhood was turned into a monastery. At the beginning of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom the relics of Saint Ivan Rilsky was displaced to the capital of the country Veliko Tarnovo as the most important relic for the Bulgarians......
**I wanted with the picture to say that the picture is symbolic! Front faithful is low near the ground, possibly he is with the knees under kneeled!!! And it looks at with the eyes of his heart... to the opening in the centre and to more in the sky! for release of soul

Hello Georgios. A very useful and educational note adds a lot to this photo. Your low POV allowed you to include the mountain in the background and gave this photo an interesting perspective. A little bit of grainy appearance to the photo but I see that you used ISO 800. The colors came out realistic even with the use of the polarizer. I like the gray tones, they add a bit of solemnness.
Have a good day!

Geia sou Giorgo,
Your POV is well chosen to discover numerous aspect of the yard of this so beautiful monastery. Your three photos allow to see all the magnificent work of architecture of the stone of the brick and also the wood. It is damage that you had no sun, it has to have very beautiful shadows, but there at the same time, this rainy weather gives an atmosphere of austerity which is well convenient for this place of meditation.
Great note! Have a nice day,

Hi Georgios,
I like your bulgarian pictures, some of them are better than a pictures made from bulgarian photographers of the same places!
For this one the only one disadvantage is that seem a bit underexposed, but I see the weather were been awful.
Kind regards
Silvia

Hello Georgios,
I like the religious buildings withdrawn in altitude. The slopes and the cold climate are perceived. Under a difficult light, architecture is development in its complexity. It is a good and useful work.
Have a nice day
