According to the science, lichens distribution is indicator for a good air quality. If that is right, the village Gitzi, situated in the Western part of Stara Planina mountain, near by the border between Bulgaria and Serbia, is with the most clean air all over the our country. This species of lishen is wide-spread in the whole surrounding area.
Probably this is Caloplaca ignea, the "flame lichen" or The "elegant sunburst lichen", Xanthoria elegans.
Some usefull facts for the lichens: Given appropriate amounts of light and moisture, clean air, and freedom from competition, lichens can colonize almost any undisturbed surface. Most lichens grow very, very slowly, often less than a millimeter per year, and some lichens are thought to be among the oldest living things on Earth. The unique biochemical compounds produced by lichens have made them useful to people in traditional cultures as dyes and medicines.
