Photographer's Note

There are many such old towns and villages all over the Balkans - in Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey. This is a district of the Melnik town in Sothern Bulgaria. It has been disputed in the beginning of the 20th century between Greece and Bulgaria. Now it is more a tourist atraction and its population numbers some 500 inhabitants. Probably many of its Greek-speaking citizens have fled to Greece during WW1 and some of its inhabitants (Bulgarian speaking) have come from Greek Macedonia... Things that are not widely spoken of these days... How nice is that nowadays these old problems are finally settled in the EU - the nearby border is almost symbolic...
