The Breendonk camp was located in a fortress, originally one in a chain of fortresses constructed to defend Belgium against German attack during the First World War.

In 1940, the Germans turned the fortress into a detention camp.

Almost 4.000 prisoners were held here. Most of them were non-Jewish, but Belgian members of the resistance.

Several hundred people were murdered here through torture, executions and harsh conditions.

When actions were taken against Germans, by the resistance, prisoners were chosen randomly, and were executed...

Breendonk is not as known as several other camps, but it was one of the hardest and most sadistic places.
