BRUGES, ‘t Zand III

My photo shows the East side of the large square with restaurants and cafes and houses.

The photo was taken the second week after the lockdown.
Here we see already people on the terraces, nut much but a new beginning

Some people, probably from the city, were present on the square.
I have been in Bruges for almost 65 years, almost every week, every day years ago, I never saw so few people on the Zand, as the square calls it.
Really spooky, if one knows that on this square in front of corona ten thousand people regularly gather here to party

The function of the square has evolved over the centuries: from a political theatre in the 13th century to the most important Flemish cattle market place in the 18th century and a railway and station square with extensive sleeping options for travellers in the 19th century. Today the square is once again the location of a weekly market, the Saturday market.
According to the diary of Galbert of Bruges, after the murder of Charles the Good in the Saint Donaas church in 1127 on 't Zand, an uprising was prepared, a new count was elected, and the oath was taken a few days later by William of Normandy. Meanwhile, the first city wall in Bruges was built. In 1128 the part of the moat around the t Zand was dug: the Smedenrei.
This divided the square in two.

I hope you like it
