BRUGES

First Sunday after lock-down, Bruges completely empty, no people on street

Walplein Bruges
:
In the 19th century, the square was characterized, among other things, by the presence of tanneries and blue dyers. It is now located on the tourist walking route from the Begijnhof via the Memlingmuseum to the Groeningemuseum and the Burg. It is therefore a busy tourist transit and stopping place. The trees, which largely determine the character of the place, were only planted in 1903. Walplein was reconstructed in 1982 and a bronze sculpture by the West Flemish artist Jef Claerhout was placed.
There have always been breweries on the square and in the neighborhood, at least since the 16th century. Today it is home to the only active brewery in the city center: the 'De Halve Maan' brewery was founded in 1856 and is now managed by the sixth generation of the founder family. Nowadays the beers Brugse Zot and Straffe Hendrik are brewed.
The almshouse 'Le Maire' is also located on Walplein. It was founded in 1910 in a converted 17th-century warehouse, where a few houses and a small chapel were added on the garden side.

I hope you like it
