A small bike trip to the small village on the borders between Belgium and the Netherlands with 500 habitants, but a wonderful quiet and pleasant village with one tea room for drink a good cup of coffee.
History:
The church owes its existence to Peter Bladelin (1403 à 1410 to 1472), also the founder of the former town of Middelburg in-Vlaanderen.Hij was financial expert and advisor to the Dukes Philip the Good and Charles the Bold of Burgundy and treasurer of the Golden Fleece. (Thanks to Marc P. J. Martens)
The church has late Gothic pieces from 1452-58. These are the octagonal crossing tower, a part of the transept and the choir.
During the religious uprising (1579-1583) has caused a lot of damage, which was restored between 1612 and 1630. Halfway through the 17th century and in the second half of the 18th century followed further renovations. The portal dates from 1768. Marc P. J. Martens: "The portal is broken by 1768, for the whole Church (west side) dates from around 1895 (architect Van Wassenhove from Eeklo)."
After heavy war were carried out in 1945 and 1952 restoration work.
In the interior you will find two old confessionals: 1676 and 1760-61.
Hang interesting paintings such as "Christ Carrying the Cross" from the early 17th century Pieter Bruegel the Younger and "The Works of Mercy" from the mid-17th century French II Francken, and a copy to the Bladelin triptych by Rogier van der Weyden. Marc P. J. Martens: "The copy of the Bladelintriptiek was painted by Jan Ryckx Bruges (and stated in church account 1630-31)." We also venoemen 'Adoration of the Shepherds "from around 1630 by Jan Ryckx," Resurrection "from 1718 by J. van den Kerckhove and" Saint Sebastian "from 1775 by B.Fricx. The "Adoration of the Shepherds" from a mirror copy of a work by Rubens (original originally in Mechelen, sind 1802 in Marseilles) (sic Marc P.J.Martens).
The six brass candlesticks on the altar are 17th century. They wear the coat of arms and pedigree of François Rugeley and wife.

Dag John,

Hello John,
A very beautiful church, nicely placed in the frame with a good lead line from the fence and well balanced by the tree.
The exposure seems a little underexposed which is how I prefer, giving rich colours as well as sharp details.
I love how the sky seems to be celebrating the church.
Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

This is a very well balanced composition with the trees to the left and the church to the right. The church is beautiful and I like the small red details, as well as the yellow bush below. The sky is very nice too with beautiful thin clouds.

Hi John,
The tree is framing well the church. The point of view is showing a double perspective of the architecture of the church. The good luminosity is enhancing the beauty of the colors. Have a nice day.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
the church building has some very attractive traits, your picture has given it great graphic charm and made it even more interesting. It dominates the frame from the right side, the context and the blue backdrop are very delightful. I like how you managed the quality of the warm tones in order to create a pleasing colour balance. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a good night,

Dear John,
In this beautifully composed photo, we see the 500-year old church with sharpness and high fidelity color. The red shutters on a few of the windows add additional color highlight. I did not know that there was a Middleburg in Belgium. In Virginia there is a Middleburg perhaps inspired by the city in Flanders.
Warm regards,
Bulent

Hello John,
How nice that you are now able to get out and about on your bike again! You must be making progress and felling better.
As always, you have written a fascinating note about this lovely church and have shown us a beautiful photograph of it.
The light here is beautiful and the colours rich, especially in that glorious spring sky with its deep blue and just a few high clouds. And it is that dark sky which makes the church stand out so beautifully. Your composition is very pleasing and I like how the church is nicely balanced by the tall tree on the left.
Gorgeous light and colours, perfect exposure and exquisite details and sharpness.
Beautiful!
Kind Regards,
John.

Hi John.
A small town with a big church means, once there were people of strong faith in that area, but I guess, these days it serves more as a historic site than a place of worship, I guess...
Very creative POV taken from the back, the tree stands tall and besides giving a shade, it's a nice complement to the entire frame.
Have a safe and healthy weekend !!!
