Hello John,

This is a beautiful portrait of a rather elegant bearded elderly gentleman wrapped up in warm clothing as he stands watching the runners racing. Perhaps he is looking out for his grandson in the race?

He looks to be rather a pale faced man but he suits his white beard and you have captured him perfectly - even without a portrait lens! The light is beautifully soft, the colours, especially his skin tones, are very true and he stands out beautifully against a very soft and nicely out of focus background because of your wide aperture setting. And stunning technical quality too.

Whether it is because of the blurred bg or not, his face seems quite 3 dimensional on my screen.
The sharp focus is wonderful.He has a very interesting face!

Hello John,
such a vivid portrait of this kind gentleman who seems to be watching the race with much interest. I like his 3/4 placement in a quite tight frame and the way he is absolutely detached from background and context. It seems that, if we look at him long enough, we will be able to read his thoughts. Textures and colours are impressively natural. I like the movement and the colours in the workshop picture too. Congratulations and thank you!

Hello John,

I wonder if your reputation preceded you, for the man to immediately give his permission for a photograph. I also wonder if you allowed him to look at the shot in camera. If so, he must have been very pleased!

This is an excellent portrait.
Firstly, it is perfectly positioned in the frame, with the eyes on the thirds line; I like that they looking into the distance, as if entranced by something or someone.
Secondly, the features are sharply defined without being too rigid, they have a delicate softness of skin and hair.
Thirdly there is a good catchlight in the eyes, a necessity for character.
Lastly, the shallow dof gives prominence against a fine bokeh.

Very, very nice.

Technically you have got your subject perfectly in focus and the background is nicely abstracted out. The expression is interesting and draws me back to have another look.
