Ghent FLORALIEN 2015
I was a visitor with the camera in my hand
But difficult because of the many people present
Since 1648, flower festivals have been organized in Ghent by the Confrerie of Saint Dorothea. The city had no fewer than three, who adorned the altar of their church each year. After the abolition by Joseph II, the flower growers founded a new association in 1808, the Société d'Agriculture and the Botanique de Gand (from 1818 the Royal Society for Agriculture and Herbal Sciences of Ghent). This happened in the inn room of Au Jardin de Frascati on the Coupure. Their goal was to hold flower exhibitions after the English example, but then together.
The association organized the first Floralies on 6 February 1809 in the Frascati. The room was just 48 m² in size. There were many rare plants before that time, because they just had flowers in the winter period. There was also a kind of competition with prizes for the most beautiful plants. Erica triflora won the incentive medal and Camellia japonica and Cyclamen persicum also received an honorable mention.
Due to the success of this first edition, a summer exhibition was held from 29 June to 2 July 1809 in the same Au Jardin de Frascati. 137 plants were exhibited. The first prize went to Plumeria floribunda, which received a silver commemorative medal.
The Au Jardin de Frascati became too small for the winter exhibition of 1810 and they moved to a party room in the Korte Meer, the room was called Sodality and was close to the Kouter. The exhibition took place from 6 to 9 February and 243 plants were exhibited.
The summer exhibition of 29 June 1810 took place in the same room as the winter exhibition. In the meantime, innkeeper Lanckman was from Au Jardin de Frascati to another location in the Holstraat where he opened Le jardin botanique (later Hof van Flora, now HTISA). The winter exhibition of January 6, 1811 took place at this location.
In 1835 the Casino of Ghent was built where an exhibition was held twice a year until 1908. Then the exhibition moved to a new building, the Feest- en Bloemeniënpaleis, in the Citadel Park. From 1990, Flanders Expo was finally exhibited. The most recent Floralies took place from April 16 to 25, 2010. Ambroise Verschaffelt (1825-1886) became Vice President of the Floraliën for a long time.
I hope that you enjoy it

Hallo John,

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Hello John,
It is a well composed photo with those two small pavilions (I don't know what else to call them) very nicely placed on each side and seen along a diagonal. The abundance of flowers must have been almost overwhelming. I am not totally keen on the colours, probably because of the artificial light. The yellow and red tones seem to be rather strong.
Kind regards,
Gert

Bonjour John
Amicalement

Hello John,
What interesting notes about the history of this flower festival!
It seems to have found a perfect location now, judging from the queue of people wishing to see it!
You have angled the photograph nicely so that we move naturally across the frame to look at the focal images of the wooden decorative features and their associated flower arrangements. The details are fine, with lovely warm colours.
My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul
