Photographer's Note

DREDGING is the operation of excavating material from a water environment, e.g. a port or a river.

Possible reasons for dredging are reshaping land and water features to alter drainage, improving or maintaining navigability and commercial use; constructing dams, dikes, etcetera.

Usually this is done by a specialist floating plant, known as a dredger. There are suction dredgers and mechanical dredgers.

Belgium has several major dredging companies.

THIS PICTURE shows a detail of a really old dredging vessel which now lies abandonned in a disused dock in the port of Antwerp. I like its old school metal science fiction dinosaur robot feel.
