Photographer's Note
it was easy to decide on the "opening photo" from our last week's trip to Guatemala - a view from the slopes of the active Pacaya volcano towards Volcán de Agua, Volcán de Fuego and Acatenango. I was close to collapsing after scrambling for about an hour up the Pacaya's dry lava, and was seriously cursing myself for dragging a DSLR with me, big lens and all. but I have to admit that this view was worth the effort, worth my buised arms and ruined pants that literally disintegrated on the sharp edges of the lava rocks.
the trip was great. and unusual, for out of more than 1000 photos I have only about 25% are landscapes. the rest, surprisingly enough, are portraits.

Hello Kristine! WOW!!!! This is simply breathtaking and I had to stop working for a moment to enjoy this view. The cloud stripes on the volcanoes are a wonderful element in this picture. Isn't it something to stay above the fog layer and see THIS! Worth every step in my eyes, okay the pants but, hm, buy a new pair :))) Have a great day, Barbara.

Hello Kristine,
For a start of travel book, it is a nice start. Exactly the kind of landscape, mood and photo I like to see and do.
Nice composition with the volcanos like islands in the cloud sea.
I never travelled in central america. I was thinking time to time to go in Costa Rica, but never finalized. It seems Guatemala can be a good choice.

Hello Kristine, what can i say that it hasn't been said before. First of all a very inspired title. Then, a great compo, taken from a perfect POV. It hardly could be better. The warm tones are in contrast with the cold clouds.

Hi, Kristine -
Only a thousand photos? On a digital camera?? Amateur!
But this one puts you in a league above - a strenuous effort that absolutely paid off. A bit of luck involved, perhaps, but "luck" favors the prepared. Excellently framed and great lighting.
I'm surprised to be the first one to add this to my favorites.
Best,
Dan

Hey..Ive been waiting for this..wonder if you took a detour and headed for another island, indulging yourself. Ive done that, i know how you could get carried away with good light and high altitude, but did you ?
Yes, these hikes up the mountain can drain you but what we see at the top, its orgasmic or maybe remotely close. I mean you now when you now and feel when you feel, there are a millions making it to the mountains every year and only a handful "feel" it. This is your first and is an assurance that you are one of them who truly "feel" it.
Soft layers in this one, unlike the earlier productions, i know they are coming one at a time. I am sure this was a good photographic journey. But you know what Kristine, to hear you say 25%landscapes and the rests people and other stuff makes me happy and sad, happy more, sad less.
You know why.

Hi Krstine,
WOW! This picture is out of the world literally. Is this what heaven looks like? Good things don’t come easy and only to those who willing to work for it. Definitely worth the effort. I’m sure your will do it again if you have to. How wonderful to have a cloudy day when you are above it. This is simply not to be asked off, it only happened to those few fortunate people. Congrats. I wish I were there.

Hi Kristine, there is an artists whose paintings remind me of this shot, the name escapes me at the moment. Those wisps of cloud and beautiful red hues across the mountains are wonderful, something out of a fairytale. The depth is excellent and I love the composition, with that small piece of land in the FG naturally framing it and leading the eye into the sweet spot. Great job, thanks for sharing it, and have a lovely day, Lisa

Hi Kristine,
Let me get this straight - you were on the side of one volcano, above the clouds, shooting a triple portrait of three other volcanoes? And the one you were standing on was active? How intrepid! I'd have ruined my pants AND underwear with that opportunity...
Beautiful result, too. Such nice light and I love the horizontal wisps of the clouds across the distant volcanoes. Your composition is really nice - at first I saw those clouds and thought maybe you took it from a plane until I noticed the craggy black lava rocks in the foreground.
Great note, too, puts me on that spot with you.
Congrats!

Hi Kristine,
Before I saw the lower left corner, and read your note, I was sure this was an arial shot from a low flying DC-3 (they still use them in Central America). I am happy that you made the climb, saddled with a heavy camera, and feel the fatigue vicariously. I happily join the chorus of admirers, 55 and counting, of this gem!

Quite a unique view which seems impossibile to imagine (or that one imagines it's impossibile). The three mountains tops emerging from the clouds look like the Pyramids in the Egiptian desert and the clouds stripes on them make it look like an extraterrestrial scenery. So fantastic seems the proper word here.

Kristine,
Blimey!! (that's a lower class version of) Gosh!!
We should probably reserve words like "spectacular" and "awesome" for views, for moments, like this. If we over use these words, we'll end have having to describe this sort of shot as "mega-awesome" - and then we'll all have to buy skateboards and hang out in the mall.
