Photographer's Note

Located at 13 km south of the city of Chiang Rai in Northern Thailand, artist Chalermchai Kositpipat built this amazing White Temple or Wat Rong Khun, as offering to the current King of Thailand, Rama IX.

The temple is an exuberance of white, but as you near the temple, you will be welcomed by dispairing hands and feet emerging out of the earth, in pain and as if begging for survival and relief from suffering. In the gardens surrounding the temple, there are statues of creatures coming from the world of darkness, dragons, skeletons and mouths open of rooftop gargoyles all ready to devour you....

You feel transported to another 'world' altogether, something Chalermchai Kositpipat wanted...and then closer to the temple aisle, we were stunned by ferocious guardian of death...his pointed finger challenging every visitor to pass him.

The sky was dreary and haze covered...Every year between February and April local farmers in Northern Thailand and neighboring countries burn huge amounts of vegetation to clear fields and get rid of agricultural waste. The result is not just a hzy dull sky but a serious, regional smog problem that causes discomfort and health issues.
