Photographer's Note

I came so far for beauty
Left so much behind
My patience and my family
My masterpiece unsigned
I thought I'd be rewarded
For such a lonely choice
And surely she would answer
To such a very hopeless voice

Came So Far For Beauty, Leonard Cohen

OK, not sure the song lyrics match exactly, but I am a huge fan of Leonard Cohen, so they will have to stick.

This is a part of an essay that I am writing and shooting, which I hope will make it into print later this year.

The business of beauty is massive here in Taiwan. There is a wide range in how it is applied though: it might be in a very modern and luxurious setting, as we see here (ShinKong Mitsukoshi Department store), or it might be quite a bit more organic in nature. However, everyone wants to make themselves look better. Better in this case means one of the cosmetic salespeople (SK-II in this case) applying their goods to a willing customer.

As this series goes forward, I hope to be able to touch on universal views of beauty, as well as differences in how the west views beauty as compared to Asia. Consider this chapter one.
