The opening of the sluice gates of the reservoir Kalawewa to let out the excess water during the monsoon season resulted in this surge of flood water gushing through the land enveloping everything in its way. The overspill is visible in the background.

Such an event occurs only once a year in this region and attracts scores of spectators.

Kalawewa is an ancient reservoir built by King Dhatusena around 400 AD. This reservoir has a circumference of 40 miles (64.4 km) and has a total area of seven square miles 7 square miles (18.1 km2) at full capacity.
