Photographer's Note

Biwon, the secret garden, is a recreational area in the Changdeokgung palace grounds, Changdeokgung being one of the larger royal palaces in Seoul.

The palace was originally brought up in 1405-1412 by King Taejong, and the park was added in a 1463 expansion by King Sejo. The palace has a colourful history and has been the home to thirteen of the Korean kings, burnt down by Japanese invaders in 1592, rebuilt in 1609 only to be burnt down again during a revolt in 1623.

Changdeokgung is one of the most important of the royal palaces in Seoul, and unlike at e.g. Gyeongbokgung and Deoksugung where you are free to roam you may only visit this palace on a guided tour.
