Photographer's Note

February 2006, Tanjung Pagar (Singapore Railway Station)

*Sometime between 7 and 8AM...*

I don't know what this man was thinking about while he was waiting for those gates to open, here, on the border between Singapore and Malaysia.

Well, technically it's not quite the border, actually it's even more confusing than that. Technically this is in Malaysia, though it's really in the heart of the Keppel Harbour complex, as far south from Malaysia as one can get in Singapore. But the land is owned by the Malaysian government and they won't return it because they know it's worth a fortune-- a bit of sovereign Malaysia in Singapore... kinda sums up their modern history in a way.

I wonder if they'll single me out, you know, lone Australian travelling less than two months since that poor Aussie guy, Van Nguyen, was hanged for trafficking. And I've just come from Hong Kong! Must watch my bags every second, can't trust some *^&#*$^ sticking something in there, you know? Otherwise it's a miserable trip to the gallows... I didn't get to visit Changi on this trip. Must do it next time... time, what is the time? Haven't they opened the gate to the platforms yet?

Have I got my ticket ready? Passport? I hope they don't play some terrible movie on the train or get one of those seats that faces backwards for the next six hours. It's a long trip to Seremban.

*the gate is rolled back: goodbye Singapore...*
