Photographer's Note

This gigantic sign stands along the highway as you drive into Rostov-on-Don (Rostov-na-Donu), just to the left of the revolutionary memorial from my other posting. Both of these enormous monuments make for an impressive welcome to Rostov, which is a very pleasant city. Although Rostov has the dubious honour of being called "the crime capital of southern Russia", it is absolutely safe for tourists and its main street will remind you instantly of tree-lined boulevards in any western European city. Conversely, the slower, more relaxed pace of life has allowed some of the more charming aspects of Soviet life to remain preserved.
