Photographer's Note

This is a re-post of a photo from 2014. In that posting from my tablet the tower wasn't straight - that I've corrected for this version plus improved the general quality of the photo.
From our hotel room in the suburbs of Moscow we could see this tower. We went to investigate and discovered the ruins of an ancient monastery and perimeter wall. Internet research indicated that it is Simonov monastery, perhaps the oldest, and once the richest in Moscow. Restoration has started but there is a long way to go. Half of the complex was demolished in the 1930s to make way for a soccer field.
I wasn't allowed inside for a look because I was wearing shorts (it was 32 degrees!)

Do view in the large version.
