Photographer's Note
Taungbi monastery V
Almost every young boy joins a monastery at least once. It is an act of devotion in a society that revers its monks as teachers and leaders.
The day of initiation into monkhood - ususally on an auspicious day - is an important day also for his parents, that have been saving their hard-earned money. A party atmosphere ensues as the boy's family throws a lavish feast and shows him off to the entire village. He is first dressed in finest silk and laden with the family jewels. He is later stripped of his riches, shaven and adorns the saffron robe of a monk It is a recreation of the Buddha's renouncement of his prince title for a life devoid of worldly possesions.
(Although I was not going to post another monk shot, but I do like this.)

Hi Elaine, fantastic portrait, full of colours and light.
the face of the young monk is really beautiful with a calm relaxed smile.
also the composition is really beautiful with the wooden pillar that composed a natrual frame.
excellent also the background.

There are so many monks pictures on this sites and still you managed to make me stop and look at your monk
I think I like him for the child in him the face (even with out hair) and his proud look.
The way he is standing leaning on the pillar with the light coming from the right is very nice composed.

Luminous portrait, Elaine. One is drawn to the lovely golden, orange colors right from the thumbnail.
Fact is there is ALWAYS rom for one more good monk picture, and this is surely one.
Cheers,
Francis

hi elaine, an awesome portrait, the boy seems to be quite happy to be a model, but also he "understands" the rules - he looks so natural in how he poses;
excellent shallow dof blurring nicely the background;
very good image, i like it a lot;
best wishes for the new week;

Hi Elaine. Fantastic Portrait, great posture and expression, wonderful light... it feels like it could be just a little more sharp but other wise a terrific job.

Hi Elaine
This picture is beautifull. I like the smile of this little monk of course, but the most beautifull is the warm light and the colors in harmony.
Well done

Hi Elaine.
Un chouette cadrage pour ce petit monk.
Le regard et le sourir qui te lance sont touchants.
La lumière et ces teintes en harmonies sont superbes.
J'aime bien cette dof avec ce fond que l'on distingue encore.
Bien fait

it seems we are competing in the novice category Elaine;-)) haha! but this is a great and very stimulating competition for us to give the best we can! there is something special in this one, a gentleness that is so peculiar to bouddhism;-) great photo Elaine!

So Elaine, here I am - are you ready.......ha ha ha ha ha ha - just kidding.
It's a very beautiful image. I like the good use of DOF - we can still see the food-bowls (isen't it?) in the background. I like his relaxed pose and I like that he is looking at you. Your use of the light coming in is just outstanding and as always all colors in the whole image are matching.
Don't you dare let this one be your last post of monks.... and no more cigars??:O)
Thank you for a very informative note and......is English really your second language???

What a beautiful and serene image. Can you just imagine the facial expression on a young European asked to devote a large part of his life to his religion? I love the way the light catches the side of his face and his pose makes a lovely composition.

Hi Elaine,
I like how your have composed the portrait, by putting him a bit aside, he seems to rest on your frame. the colors and the bokeh are excellent, warm and well saturated.
Have a nice day.

As you say, Elaine, there are many shots of novices on TE, but this is one of the better ones. Your composition is excellent, as is the lighting and DOF. Perhaps it could have coped with a little more sharpening, but apart from that it is an excellent photograph. Cheers . . . David

Dear Elaine,
how can resist to travel back to Myanmar?
I can't and I'm always in the mood to go back and ready to... Everywhere things are changing but in "our" Myanmar they don't in the way we wish but people there has something unique, "that" something who always whisper in our ears: come back, come back again!
Warm colours of the heart in your image.
A sweet smile
Luca
