Photographer's Note

I don't remember if I was mainly attracted by the bottles on the shelves or the girl's eyes. Most probably it was the girl. She was standing at the entrance to this kedai kopi, coffee house, according to the sign above the door also "licensed to retail intoxicating liquors for consumption on the premises".

This is from the city of Sandakan on the northeastern tip of Borneo, in the Malaysian state of Sabah. My last photo was from Sarawak state in 1976. In 1979 I returned to Borneo, but only to the northern part.

I had come to Sandakan mainly to see the orangutan sanctuary at Sepilok, a short distance away, but I also spent some time hunting for photos in the city. I have a vague memory of taking this one, almost 38 years ago, but I don't remember at all taking the workshop photos of women selling bananas or a man selling fish.

All these photos are original B&W, scanned from Ilford HP5 negatives.

Here is a larger version of the main photo.
