Photographer's Note

On our trip through malaysia we did a stop over in the Kinabatangan natural reserve.

This jungle is a well preserved source of fauna and flora. However the palm tree plantations run right up to it's borders and are threatening to expand over in to this natural reserve and destroy the wildlife as it has done in the thousands of acres around Sandakan.
palm tree plantation produce palm oil used in many of western products (food, makeup, you name it it probably has palm oil).
While producing a good income for the locals, it replaces the rain forests and does not provide adequate shelter, food or habitat for local wildlife.
As such while green and lush these plantations could just as well be deserts.

Anyway for the time being the reserve is safe and is one of the last places you can see oran-utangs in the wild.

Their are several jungle camps in the area that allow you to visit the rain forest. however all trips are only authorized on the river. men are not allowed to make landfall.
we stayed in one such cam and this is a picture of one of the early morning river trips we took.

I will try and post a few more pictures of the place.
