Photographer's Note
Photography for Beginners Series no. PfB(8).
Sometimes I made blunders in photography but you wont get to see it because I am not going to post them. Jusni flew from West Malaysia to Kuching and we came here for 1st shoot of sunset. Using USD$100 lens, I tried to find the POV of getting the warm light on this architecture coming up in town. For a beginner like me, to find a good POV is a test of the learning curve. Most of you will confront the shooting by walking around a bit and finding the right light condition, the best composition and a clear shot - that is what we term as Point of View POV.
Regardless of the distractions of blue container box, a painted wall end of old buiding, lamp poles and a jetty hut interfering with the clear view of this new architecture, I could not move to a better position of finding the best POV. Behind me was the evening sun, so I needed to get the warm tone and the blue sky. On the other hand, I could not run too far away because behind me on this wharf would be where we waited for interesting sunset and blue hour views.
So I used this 70-300mm lens [well the camera store owner laughed at me for using such cheap lens with D700 FX camera] and tried my best composition of the structure. A decent frame but not the best POV. I am sure you would agree that the B&W lamp pole is bad intrusion on the architecture but I could not clone it out easily. At least this is the actual view you would see standing on the whard today. One good thing about using telephoto is that no optical distortion to the building is found.
So to enable a good handheld shutter of 1/60s without motion blur, I had iso1250. Aperture f/4 lowest was beyond my control due to focal length. Next time if I find a better POV to show this architecture, I will let you know about it. Thank you for viewing this PfB.

Hi Bill, Is it this golden flower you showed earlier? Very interesting architecture. Beautiful light and nice colours. As to POV, I would prefer without these buildings - the blue one and this on the right. Is it a temple?

Hi Bill,
The point of view is taking our eys toward the building in the background. It is also allowing us to see the details an colors of the architecture of the building. That building is framed by other types of obstructions. The sky is sending a light which has a special effect on the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.

Hello Bill, this composition is really a piece of cake: the blue of the small building (1st one) recalls the sky, some shades of the main building (its top) recall the pale clouds...and then it's full of shapes: squares, triangles, cones...all under a beautiful, warm light. Well done!
Have a nice day!

Hi Bill.
The lovely soft light and the colours of the various buildings make this shot a pleasure. I read your note with great interest. At this size and compression level, the cheap lens will go unnoticed, I believe. As for the composition, I actually like the blue shed! We can still see much of the impressive building behind. The sky is is a beauty with its wispy clouds. Very nice evening atmosphere.

Hello Bill,
I see pinky sunlight shining on the walls, good frame to these variety types of architectures in this pov, what a silent corner at early night, of course I see the lamp is on, thanks for sharing.

Hi Bill,
Interesting one for your PfB series. I'm sure there are many who can learn from it. Colorful and a bit soft probably due to the lens being wide opened. Distractions yes but a good documentary photo of the changing landscape of your city. I would clone out that tiny piece of lamp jutting in on the middle right frame. Regards. Latiff.

Hello Bill.
A colorful shot, perhaps not so much deep.
There could be useful a human figure or a vertical item in the foreground.

hello Bill
I know this building very well, but first,I didn't recognize it because of the blue container box!The DOF is not very important and I thought that it was the same building, blue walls with the same roof than the new parliament building! The effect is strange and funny, and the light of the end of afternoon give nice warm colours!

Hello Bill, After reading your note where you have pointed out all the distraction I have that there are no distractions except maybe for one, along the RHS of the frame ;-). The light & the warm golden tones of the afternoon sun is what makes this scene a very lovely one And yes I also recognise the top of that building even if it is upsidedown, It has a beautiful soft golden tone.
Take care
Santo
PS the cheap lens has done an excellent job here.

Bill,
The architecture is great except for the blue box in the foreground. The lighting and colors are great with excellent sharpness and detail. The off center placement of the building works well with the painted wall providing balance.

Good warm cold colour contrasts, between the orange & blue, with excellent sharpness & framing, on the unusually shaped building. Have a great weekend!

Hi Bill,
what a complicated but interesting picture :) the main building which is surrounded by so many details... almost chaotic, but not really :) I like it how they all, taken together, finally realize themselves in that dome of a golden tint - the dome which is reaching for the sky.
First of all, the colours - tere's a very good balance among them all! The lighting - I find it perfect for such conditions. As far as I can see, the evening colours were very well retained in the shot.
Wishing you a very nice weekend!
kind regards,
Elena

Hello Bill,
A good comment on your photographic choice… Me, what I appreciate here it is the harmony of all these colors and the soft light which emphasizes them well. The architectural unit is also interesting. For my part the standard lamp is indeed difficult to make disappear, on the improved photograph of our friend Christine that is seen. Well done Bill.
With all my friendships and very good Sunday,

Hi Bill,
Interesting combination of forms, roofs and colours. I did read your info and don’t agree fully with what you write about the best POV. If you only want to accentuate the modern building you are right, but this image has more to show than that. There is a lovely contradiction in form and colours in this POV with the other buildings in front. The low evening sun accentuate this moody image.

Olá Bill, I think you did a great work here. The whole set is interesting in a curious mix of diferent shapes and colors. The modern roof in the background dominates and gives some elegance and I love the way the lamppost fits in between the buildings like a chimney coming out of the blue container.

Hi Bill,
Nice lesson, thank you!
You are right that the light is quite warm. It's an interesting and somewhat lonesome-looking composition, even with all the 'distractions', as you put it. I agree that macro lenses do not distort and that is why I love them - especially when photographing people.
TFS and have a great day!

Hi Bill,
Beautiful, Beautiful light here for a wonderful photograph session. Well sometimes it nice to include some of the other things in the area, though to many it may not consider to be desirable elements in a composition, Like other tourist in front of a monument but at time they do make interest and different composition. and somtimes it give the essense of the area and touch of reality. We can truely avoid a lot so things we don't like to see in our photo, it even give people a wrong impression. This is a really nice shot and well composed to include all the element and yet is look like it all work together as one beautiful composition.

Hi Bill,
I read your with much interest. It's full of the TE spirit, maybe not the one described in the "about sections of the site", but of the sense of share our experiences as amateur photographers. Anyway, the photo itself is also full of the "other", more official, TE spirit.
No matter I like to try learning a bit of theory, technique and care much for discussions on matters like compo, light management and so on, when I go out to shoot I am mostly chaotic and instinctive, so I would hardly be able to write such a comprehensive story about a photo of mine and specially about my thoughts at the time of shooting.
Your thoughtfulness paid well here, I find the compo very achieved and the light and colours absolutely wonderful.
TFS, Regards,
José

Bill,
After reading your note I have to disagree with you, POV may be nice, but in the case of your picture above, I think that the structures add to DOF and make the shot more interesting. If I would had made the picture I don't know. Apart from the beautiful light it does not speak for itself. Said that I think, that your picture is technically speaking well composed and executed.
Best regards

Hi Bill.
How could I miss this post. I'm sure the scene looks very different now. We have talked about this lens and I don't mind owning this if I have yet to have a 70-300. I shoot more within this range than before as the view is getting more and more interesting. You have played with the light well and the contrast of the blue cabin and the ad board is beautiful. You should have kept this and framed as this is part of the history by now.
It has been nice listening to all your amazing stories and how our life changed by all the previous events... making us a lot wiser, I guess.
Thanks for sharing this image and everything else and best regards to you in 2010.
